hey! I have a 2001 ttr250. bought it from a guy for 450 bucks with the title! bad thing was it smoked and he said it would stop once it wormed up never stopped... So i replaced the valve seal along with rings and honed the cylinder. Ran great after that no smoking at all. Then i went to a atv part and layed it over in water... filled it full with water.. got all the water out of it and now its smoking really bad and i have rode it alot so i know the water is out of it.. I am not sure whats wrong any tips? thanks

Sounds like 2 separate problems to me.
I'd say you did all the right things to fix the smoking in the first place but since you dunked it in the water what have you done to fix it?
You say you got all the water out but have you changed the oil or checked the compression etc?
How does it run?

Bad luck cry

Was the engine still turning when it filled with water or did you try and start it with the cylinder filled with water?

If so, it is highly likely that the rings have been damaged. A new set of rings might get your engine sorted.

Did you change the oil/filter ?

If the smoke is white... it maybe water"steam"
I have dump my XT660 in rivers a few times..filled
the motor once..It wouldn't turn over till I removed the
plug & pumped the water out.. then I changed the oil/filter
when I got home... didn't have any water in the oil
but changed it anyway... $50 for oil/filter is cheaper than
a engine rebuild...

yes iv changed the oil because it was really milky.. When i laid it over it was still running and then it died. I laid it over on the exhaust side so im thinking it sucked it in when it died.. I pulled the plug and got most of the water out. It took a while to get it running again but once i got the water out it ran fine for a few hours and then started smoking again.. And now i have a top end ticknonono I have no clue what i should do, pull the motor again before something bad happens?

In the extreme, water getting into a spinning engine can bend valves and conrods cry

I am sure that hasn't happened to yours but, if you are worried, then take the head off and check it out.

Whilst you are in there, I suggest you fit new rings if the bore and piston still look OK and do the usual checks on valve clearances, timing chain etc.

So say that the cylinder is junk along with the piston can I bore it over?

No point in getting ahead of yourself - check it out first.

What did you take your barrel out to when you had the rebore done?

There are only two standard Yamaha oversize pistons available +0.5mm and +1.0mm.

Wossner (and maybe Wiseco) offer two further oversize pistons of +1.5mm and +2.0mm so it's unlikely your barrel is scrap unless it is already at +2.0mm oversize and damaged.

Why do you think the barrel might be damaged?

Well when we rebuilt it the cylinder got rehoned. The piston had marts on it like it was slapping around but the cylinder was good. I didnt scope the cylinder when I had it out. So im not to sure if the cylinder was true to the piston, I mean it is a 2001..

how far can you bore the ttr250 over? I found a a wiseco 1mm over. Would that work? Would i have to change anything. I would like to keep it stander size but I do not have the money for a new cylinder it would be cheaper for me to bore it over and put the wiseco in it.

You need to get the head off and find out what the current bore size is (and the state of the cylinder wall) before looking for a new piston.

I listed the possible oversizes earlier but you need only think about those once you know your starting point.
