Having been caught out by losing a split link on the trail a few weeks ago, I only just remembered to pack a new one in my tank bag before a trail ride on Tuesday.

I find that the side plate is always a tight fit on the pins making it difficult to fit without a press when out riding so I always modify the spare I carry.

I just file out the holes in the side plate just enough that i can get it on the pins without a struggle.

I then grease it and pack it in a waterproof packet.

All a bit obvious to the old stagers but may help new owners biggrin

NB Make sure that the link you carry matches your chain and isn't one for a different chain that you changed eons ago wink

That's great info. I usually carry channel locking pliers with me to make a trail side master link install easier. But it's still a tough task. I'll be doing the same method as you did now. Thanx.
