New to this TTR250 thing.

Just picked up a 2006 TTR250.  Live in Castle Rock CO, Elevation 6,500 - 10,000 depending on riding.  Already gathered tips on jetting.  Took out snorkel and baffle.  Jetted to 135 main, clip one from the very top.  Had FMF pipe but was way too loud.  Sold on eBay.  Suspension feels a bit soft, I am 6 ft, 185 lbs.  Would like to firm it up if anyone has suggestions.  Changed bars, grips for comfort.  Bike has about 40 hours as I bought almost new.  

If anyone lives close by, I try to ride once a week.  Can head over to Rampart Range.  

Also have 2005 KX250F which I set up for desert and trail riding.   Tried track and racing but found it a bit dangerous.

I have to submit a picture of my TTR250 after taking off all of those awful stickers the bike came with.  A little better as I am not into all the decals like the younger kids.

Hi Arnold.

Can you just pop off road easily over there, or is there particular areas or routes that you're allowed to ride?

Over here in the UK it's pretty restricted and even where you are allowed someone will probably think they know better and wave a stick at you.

Did you put the standard pipe back on after the FMF? I'm going up the Pyrenees in a couple of weeks and I'm thinking the altitude will be about 2-2.5k metres. Times three, plus a bit, that would be about where you're at. I have a couple of smaller jets. Do you think they'll be a necessity?

Suspension wise they are soft, but I like that. Old bones. It is meant as a different sort of beast to the KX though. Much more steady, but then I don't know the KX too well.

There are so many places to ride it would make your head spin. You pay a one time fee of $25.00 per bike (In Colorado) and you can ride for the year. The trails are marked and you have maps to follow. In some areas you can ride one way for miles and miles.

I did put the standard pipe back on as the FMF was painfully loud. I do want to get a pipe as it makes a big difference in power, just waiting for the right quiest pipe. FMF makes what the call the "Q" Series which stannds for Quiet. had one on a DRZ400 and it was great. As quiet as stock but much better sound and performance.

Best jetting for that altitude is 135, throttle clip up one. (This is what I read and am going with. Make sure to take snorkel off if you haven't already. Road my bike with stock jetting at the same altitude as you are going and it ran a bit rough but made it through.

By the way, the KX250F is a fun and light bike to ride. Only 203 lbs dry weight, manageable power and great suspension.

That looks brilliant, I'm so jealous. Why have we got nothing like that here?

People. Have you seen this? Check out the links in Arnold's post. You'll go green.

Maybe as green as his little kwacker. Enjoy the bike's Arnold, though I fail to see how you could fail to.

And thanks for the jetting tips. I'll take the bits with me and do it I need to. Another boon of the TTR. Dead easy to work on.

Hey Arnold nice clean bike, I bought a 2003 US model last year also with very few hours. I opened the airbox up quite a bit and moved the clip one notch to the lean and it runs well at 6000-8000 ft with the stock 137 main jet and stock (US) pipe, just a little popping on the decel. Runs great below 5000 ft at middle setting. Still using stock air filter. Like you I don't want another super loud bike but I'd like some more punch so something like the Q would be interesting. Please post results if you go for it. I'm guessing you'd have to go up on the main jet with that pipe but at altitude perhaps not.

What do you mean when you say you removed the "baffle?" You mean in the pipe? Airbox?

Somewhere on this forum a US member posted jet/clip tips from a Colorado rider for different altitudes (3 set ups as I recall). Probably under "carb stuff," but I couldn't find it on a quick search.

If you haven't seen the FAQs and stickys on this site they are excellent.  See the FAQ for uncorking, and the very helpful link to a summary on ThumperTalk (this guy 123BigcoopDawg576 on ThumperTalk has good tips including some interesting points on the US stock pipe). On this forum a member named Jarrah, and some others from down under, appear to have refined the science of uncorking -- figures the Aussies would be the uncorking experts.

As for the soft tail on the TTR, at age 50 I can appreciate a big cushy rear end.evileye But I'm only 160 lbs. I especially like the way it climbs, except on washboard where it starts to pogo stick all over the place.  In softer stuff it digs in and holds on real nice.
