Oil weep / leak
Permalink

Morning - can the oracle of knowledge help me solve a problem on my beloved TTR?!

I recently replaced the rocker cover gasket on the TTR as i had a slight weep which i believe went well....however....as you can see from the picture attached, i have a leak still and this time i think it's coming from the circular black grommit in the middle of the picture.

Question is...what is this little grommit for and why would it all of a sudden started weeping and leaking oil onto the exhaust head where it meets the cylinder?

Any help much appreciated.IMG_1893.jpg

The grommet is for the decomposition mechanism lever thing, they all leak at some point, brian used to sell a fix for this, probably still does, have a look on totally ttr should be there. Brian will be along soon and answer your question better than I have

That's the classing "decompressor plug" leak, Neil.

It's more ugly than serious!

This CLICKY LINK will show you how to remedy.

Replacement rubber bungs are available from dealers but a more permanent replacement bung is available from Totally TTRs Extras.

Hi hertsrider,

That is the plug for the decompressor lever (not fitted in your case). I suggest that you buy one of Brian's aluminum inserts with the Viton O-ring HERE

If you need a guide see HERE.

Edit: *Slaps Martyn and Adrian for being so quick* biggrin

Just got round to repairing this and have hit a problem....underneath the black rubber is actually what appears to be a metal plug...there was only a thin layer of rubber over it.
There is no obvious way to remove the old plug...
I've undone the little bolt next to it to see if i could lever it out but no joy.
Any clues? Don't really want to take the rocker cover off but might that be the only way? Puch the plug out from the inside??
Help??

That "metal plug with rubber around" is obviously the remains of a previous plug replacement - except the old plug wasn't removed and just pressed further into the orifice by inserting the new plug on top. no

Just stick a screw driver/small chisel into it and lever it out - don't damage the "bore" of the hole though. bleh

As Martyn says wink

Remove the old plug by punching a hole in it and levering it out whilst being very careful not to scratch the aluminium sides in the head casting.

I did tentatively try that but it felt wedged in.....nothing to really get any purchase / leverage on....
I'll have to have another look....
Any other clues??!!

What I did with mine is-

Took out the decompressor M6 ''special'' retaining bolt.

Used a screwdriver to punch the seal near the edge, it then slid on an angle and I was worried about marking the decompressor housing. So I ended up using a sharper screwdriver to piece the plug so I had something to lever against (obviously using the seal as the lever point.)

It came out easily in my case, it was more the worry of damaging the housing that the work went into, and that I was worried that I would damage the plug and not be able to get it out without taking the top cover off.. Turns out I had nothing to worry about. smile

The new alloy plug fit's like a glove, so all you do is push it in by hand and tighten the M6 ''special'' retaining bolt.

Good luck!

Jarrah
