Thought I would ask if anyone is interested in a ride out in Devonconfuse

Ride now confirmed

We will be starting at Castle Brake in Woodbury EX5 1HA. On the Saturday 16th August

This is a green laning ride out.

There is plenty of camping at castle brake, if anyone is coming from further away.

The ride would be suitable for novices willing to have a go ( a couple of gnarly lanes ), intermediate and above riders, the ride will be at a steady pace.

Good luck with the vince matey!

A bit of more detail about the ride

This is a run that I have done once before and is probably one of the best day's ride I have had, that is why I am doing it againsmilesmile

Lot's of different lanes and not to much tarmac in-between, some nice rocky lanes, good climbs and descents. Fantastic views and we will be stopping at beer for lunch, very nice place by the sea! Nice river crossing somewhere confuseconfuse lanes through woods etc etc. Like I say a great day's ride with all types of terrain.

Would love to see lot's of ttr's.

Suitable for all but beginners.

Steve

What a great day that would be, would love to try out the fabled Devon Lanes. Unfortunately, I've only had the TTR for 3 months and although I've put about 700 miles on her around Surrey Hills & Hindhead I'm probably not ready to ride out with the experts yet! Will need to sort out a trailer etc if/when I'm ready to move on to 'Devon Narlies'! Have a great day chaps - hope the weather's good for you (but loads of the slippery stuff too)!

Great day out on the East Devon lanes in a group of 6 TTR250s, one white (run leader Steve's) and five blue hence the name of the ride - White Leader and the Blue Swarm biggrin

The weather was perfect, dry and cloudy. The cloud kept the temperature down nicely. A bonus was some heavy downpours during the week which meant no dust and some nice grippy conditions.

Great day out with excellent company. Many thanks to Steve for organising the ride smile

Fortunately Steve got the only puncture of the day and it was in the carpark before we had set off so everything was nice and clean and tools readily to hand.

I was TEC (Tail End Charlie) so didn't get many pics once we had set off. These are all that I have - mostly from the car park including Steve's tube changing episode.

Here the lane was blocked by fallen branches which were quickly cleared. A more substantial blockage later in the day needed handsaws and all hands to the job.

The next three photos were taken at what we call The Viewpoint (for obvious reasons) with Sidmouth in the background.

My last pic was taken atop Mutters Moor just before the lane descends through the middle of Sidmouth Golf Course.

What a lovely day you had for your run , pity I had a 12yr old grand-daughter's birthday party to attend. cry

It wouldn't have been Steve's run without something happening and the puncture fitted the bill perfectly.

I look forward to further pictures.

White leader reporting inbiggrin

After a bad start, my puncturecry like martyn said it would not be my ride if there was not some sort of dramabiggrinbiggrin

The blue swarm performed really well, though there was some reports of a few badgers biting some of the formation in the lanes and I was witness to a full on del boy at the top of passaford lane, will keep the pilots name a secret to stop further embarrassmentwink Shame I was up front not to witness the carnage behind, though I do hope there is some video evidence!

We took in many good lanes and stopped for much needed food stop at beersmilesmile After pilots had re fuelled we set of for some more lanes, nice river crossing at rats hole and some really stony/rocky climbs that I love up pinhill and east hill strips ACEsmilesmile

Tech stuff...

79 miles

45 green lanes

7 hours and 51 minutes

Average speed 10mph... max speed 66.7mph

6 riders

Personally I had a great time. Riding my bike for a whole day in great company! How good is that!

Steve

Video footage (to follow) of the rats hole river crossing and the not so deepish rut at holeston, shame someone has filled it in a bitcry

It's actually on a dead-end UCR. The cliff that carried the road collapsed many years ago and created two dead-end UCRs now linked by a lovely footpath.

The old map below shows where the UCR used to run between the arrows:

Thanks all for a great day out. Specially Steve and Brian for leading and TECing respectively.

Sorry to have to bail a bit early sounds like the last few lanes were fun. I was only 10 mins late home so wasn't too far in the doghouse!

I'll take a look at some of the footage I got on the GoPro and try to get something up, might take a few days as I'm away for work for a couple of them this week.

Look forwards to the next one.

Smashing videos, thanks Pug.

You were enjoying my back yard - lovely lanes but a bit wetter than I really like.

It's amazing how they change so dramatically with the seasons.

Any more vids? confuse

Thanks for putting the vids on here martyn, interestingly the last bit of the last vid, is to view point, what you all did not know is that the roots of all evil run along this lane and we done well to get all riders up and down this lane with no incidents!!! There has been many a broken bone on this lane.

The lanes look so overgrown in the vids! Lush and green, which made them interestingsmile

Love your wr/enfield beastsmilesmile Have you still got it?

Here's a compilation of a few bits and bobs from Saturday's ride out.  It's been a while since I did any editing and my gad it takes a long time to upload the finished video to You tube!!

When I get some more time I'll go through the other memory card from later on in the ride and do a part 2.

Enjoy.

Look out for the sympathy-badger at about 8-mins in

Thanks for all the videos, Pug.

Watching them and imagining that I was riding along with you all, it's smashing fun.

But, by the time I've watched all the six hours I think my bums going to be sore with all the pillion riding I'm doing. hmm

Keep them coming, please.

Martyn

Great videos, thanks for sharing the fun. Some very narrow lanes there where the badgers can take bites out you! Got to watch out for those horizontal tree trunks trying to take yer legs off!

John Leah will know the number if you let Steve have your name and address for the run record James.

Sorry to hear about your back and head gasket - hope both will be cured quickly!

Thanks for posting up the pics - nice to see one of us got a shot of our lunch stop at Beer Beach biggrin

Your hub is safely tucked away in my garage wink

Do you need a pic Martyn?

I think Steve was also interested in some machining on a hub that he has?

yes Brian if you have a pic or two of it up close does it look like there is meat enough to machine out an put a 1-2 mm ring of phosphor bronze in to get it back to the bearing size
