New throttle cable length
Permalink

I need a new throttle cable as I have noticed the lower of the two cables is starting to break apart near the carburettor end. I bought my TTR second hand and so don't know whether I need a standard or extra long cable.

The bars are Renthal 966 but I don't know whether any bar risers have been fitted. What's the easiest way of working out whether I need a longer cable? And would there be any problems if I bought an extra long cable but in fact had a standard length bar/riser combination?

You will not need a extra long cable. The standard one will be more than long enough, even with high risers fitted.

Hi Rob

If your cable is damaged then it is best to replace it asap in my opinion!

If you have standard cables fitted at the moment (not quite sure how you would know) and you can turn lock to lock without the cable binding (or opening the throttle!) then you should be OK to replace with standard length cables.

However, the longer cables are about the same price as the standard ones so, if you have any doubt about the binding or think you might raise the bars higher or change to higher/wider bars in the future, then you might as well go for the extra length.

Even though the standard length cable should fit your set-up, as Brian says, it is probably better to get the longer cable, especially if wanting to fit high riser handlebars with a bar riser kit such as this one HERE.

It would be easy to tell if a bar riser kit is fitted by looking at the upper triple grip clamp. You can see from looking at mine that I have the bar spacers installed-

Thanks for the replies guys. I've looked at the bike again and I think I have a standard set up.

I'll probably buy the longer set because I may very well raise the bars at some point. And due to endless repairs there's no hurry to replace the cable as I've not been on the road for weeks!

just fitted an all balls replacement set of throttle cables , the last set i fitted (non genuine )  i had to swing the cable outlet on the grip down under the bars to get enough length for the renthal  bars , the set i just fitted from all balls fitted with everything back to standard with a bit of length to spare .

i also like the rubber seals on the lower end of the cables which will reduce the amount of dust getting up and wearing the inner cables through as the last two sets did .
