Starts but wont rev out
Permalink

Hi all. I have just bought an 03 ttr 250, I have a problem with that the bike wont rev out, it starts ok, and rides off the pilot jet ok but soon after more throttle opening the thing starts spluttering. Ive had the carb off and cleaned it out,( even tho it was clean), changed the plug, put fresh fuel in, but still no improvement. Anyone out in TTR land got any ideas or had similar problems? I didn't get much of a ride on it before I bought it( only 1st round a yard). Thanks in advance to any replysconfuse

The side-stands function is to stop an owner riding off with the stand down. It will only have an effect as soon as you put it in gear, not as you start to open it to full throttle.

I would say that it is running rich myself, either that or there is something loose in the carb. I would meticulously check the carb for loose jets or screws, if that does not help, try raising the jet needle clip position.

Also, make sure that the accelerator nozzle is not blocked and squirts fuel when the throttle is applied. More info on the carb HERE

Did someone say that the carb was worn or are you just making an unrelated statement?

Il check these things today, must say the carb did squirt fuel when I lifted the slide with my finger. Pretty sure its not running rich, its more like the ignition not advancing as the motor revs out. Do the ignition systems give any trouble on these bikes?. Cant see the problem being the stand switch either but il try it.Thanks

Fuel starvation caused by a blockage or the one-way valve in the filler cap jammed?

Loosen the float bowl drain valve - do you get a good flow of petrol?

If it doesn't have good fuel flow, the problem will not only be at full throttle, it will also effect the idle and off idle. It can even stall and not start without the use of choke. Somehow I think it is not fuel flow and it is running rich.

Any other symptoms?

Here is a link to another owner that was pretty sure it wasn't running rich- HERE

Just trying to clear the obvious out the way Jarrah wink

Plus it's a very simple check that also makes sure the drain screw isn't seized - method in my madness eh?

Sorry, I was flitting between forums last night, both carb related threads. I realise no one said it was worn.

Sorry about that but better you find out now than after you have dunked the TTR in a ford and need to drain the carb blankstare

Next time you have the carb off, fix it as per here

New drain screws available here

Any problems, just ask...

An easier way to check would be to loosen the fuel cap and see if the problem is still there. Also removing the fuel line will confirm a good fuel flow or not. It will not help if the needle and seat or the filter inside the seat (AKA needle valve) is blocked though. However, since you spent so much time cleaning and you have not reported any other symptoms, I doubt it will be blocked.

Just some more info to disregard. wink

Jarrah

PS. Interestingly enough, the previous owner states- ''It's a 53 plate in blue, pretty standard bike apart from ally bars, leaver guards with indicators, CRD front pipe and custom "bash" plate all original spares come with the bike + an FMF "silencer" '''... Wonder if the PO remembered to swap the jets back to standard and if the standard exhaust is being used?

Thanks Jarrah, just back in again! Il check the running with the fuel cap loose, valve seems to work when blown and sucked( excuse the innuendo). the fuel runs free when the pipe is removed from the tap, tried that earlier. Got andy m coming round in a bit to see what he thinks, let you know later
