Front Suspension Problem

Hi all wonder if anyone can help me out before I dismantle my front forks.

When I am riding off road and the front wheel leaves the ground there is a load metallic clunk noise from the front forks.

Sounds like the forks are bottoming out when retracting.

When the weight is on the front and the forks compressing there is no noise.

Checked the air pressure and increased it slightly to 5psi, and confirmed there is no oil leaks.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

First of all check steering stem bearings, wheel bearings and that your caliper or anything else is not loose.

Vincey,
I may be wrong, but I think the air valve is for letting the air out, not putting any in.
... I call it "burping" the forks.

Putting 5 Psi in the forks is optional. Some say it's best not to because it puts too much pressure on the seals.

I don't need air in mine, they work wonderfully with 10W oil in them.

It does sound like the fork bushing may be worn.

Get the TTR up on the stand with the front wheel in the air. Grab the lower fork legs and move back and forth. If there is play and/or clunking then it is almost certainly your fork bushes that are worn and they are worth replacing. Just as well do the seals whilst the forks are apart.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Will start with checking for play and go from there.

Will let you know results.
