TTR Cylinder Head Fitting

I'm thinkig of buying a new complete head for my TTR. I've found one with a number of '4GY01', but on mine the number is '4GY00'.
I cant find any info on what is the difference between the two. Will it fit ?

Welcome to the forum Adimitrov!

The Russian and UK fiche I have looked at for TTRs (both Raid and OE) from 1993 to 2004 list the head as 4GY-11102-01(or 02)-00

The American fiche for the blue models give 3XP-11111-00-00

However, it is my experience that the cylinder heads, valves and cams are interchangeable across all the years.

New heads are very expensive - retail in the UK is £954 ashamed

Welcome to the forum adimitrov,

As Brian suggests it would'nt be cost effective enough to buy a new head. Better off using your head & buying new valves & springs & getting a mechanic to do the work.

That's what i thought you (kinda) meant biggrin I would advise to replace the valve stem seals as they should be cheap as & well worth doing to be sure.

To replace them it is easy & i know an easy trick using a socket of the correct size & a hammer.. The hammer is to give it a short sharp tap to loosen the collets/keepers.If you decide to do it i can tell you more but here is a vid on it is on Youtube. click here

I use the end of an extension bar so i do'nt need the magnet but either way will do just be carefull.

Thanks you for your answers. Sorry for my bad English , but by "new" I ment replacing my old one with a other one from ebay. :)
I have bent valves and I have calculated that it will cost less if I buy a complete head.
Here in Bulgaria the 4 valves cost 132 GBP. I've found a head with everything for 135 + shipping :)

Also do one at a time so all the components remain on the original valve they came from.

It would help to give the vavle a clean but be carefull not to scratch or damage it in any way. Don't go too far with the cleaning side of things either, just remove the black carbon deposit & don't clean (too hard) where the valve seats or you may need to re-grind & re-shim the valves.

Just a suggestion but don't know how good it will be if your Cylinder head is damaged inside the ports???

I have 4 good (used)valves here that you could have for a mere AU $50.00 for all compoments & can throw in valve seals for an extra AU $ 10.00 if you like? I can assure you that these valves are in great shape & are ready to use. You will have to reseat the valves & (maybe re-shim?) though blankstare This is not that hard though just time consuming if you don't have the right tools for the job.

It would cost about 138.810 BGN postage included.... give or take a few $$

Although am unsure whether customs will make you pay for importing??

Thanks for the video and the advice. biggrin
I just wonder if I change the valve stem seals, do I have to readjust the valve clearance, given that it is correct before that :)

If they are correct before you take the valve out it will be correct when you re-fit it. The adjustment won't change.

Just use a pair of long nose pliers to get the valve stem seal out. Be carefull putting it in...Should be able to do this with little or no force.

This was before i cleaned them...still in very good condition...These i replaced only because i was unsure if i would be able to find a head with good valves but i ended up not needing them. Although i still used the new ones & kept these. They were removed from a 2005 model TTR250. This is a pic of the head they came out of...

This was before i cleaned them...still in very good condition...

Now after i cleaned them...

If you want them PM me or reply in this thread. If not good luck finding a head with good valves.

If you made that offer earlier, I would've taken it without thinking. :) But, I already bought the cylinder head and it is even in shipping.

If the head is damaged, I will have to take just the valves and put them in my old head. Thats the works case scenario I think.
BTW the previous owner of my bike has broken the camshaft caps and welded them instead of getting new ones. This is also one of the reasons I bought the head from ebay, because It comes with the caps and shafts.
