There is usually a number stamped into the metal tab on the keyring. Not sure if there is any other mark but i have'nt seen one. You could take your lock out & take it to a locksmith.

The ignition and steering lock keys should be the same. See here to find the key number.

The ignition keys, believed to be original, does not fit my steering lock. I never got an extra key for the steering lock from the previous owner so I am unsure how to source such a key.

Hi guys,

I have bought a second hand TTR 250 Raid from November '15 and have been reading the useful blogs on this site ever since and before, very useful !! :D

I have a question about this topic and was wondering if you could help me out..

I bought my bike with a broken part of the key in the innermost part of the steering lock and after a lot of patience, I still didn't succeed in getting it out. The locksmith told me that I would have to get the whole lock out in order for him to be able to work on it..

As the lock cover does never completely uncover the steering lock case, I have no idea how can this be done and I would love to have a lockable steering..

All comments in sizes and forms are appreciated.

David

Welcome to the forum David.

New steering locks are available in the shop:-

https://totallyttrs.com/epages/699105d9-e4cc-4b32-b236-84e72cd67f84.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/699105d9-e4cc-4b32-b236-84e72cd67f84/Products/TTR-0500

together with other bits. To open the above link hold down your right mouse button then take the option to open it in a new tab or window, saves whizzing off and losing this page.

I think that removal involves grinding off the cover swivel pin - but I'm not sure as I've never done it.

Good luck.

Martyn

Welcome to the forum!

To get the steering lock out you first have to remove the cover.

The cover is held on by a spiralled pin as shown below:

Removing steering lock cover 1.jpg

To start to get the pin moving you have to use a bit of force - hammer and chisel or old screwdriver and go in as shown in the photo below:

Removing steering lock cover 2.jpg

When the pin has started to come out you can grip it with a pair of pliers and wind it all the way out.

Once the cover is off, the lock should pop out as long as it is not in the locked position.

It might be cheaper to buy new as suggested by Martyn rather than pay to have it repaired.

Brian

It might be worth saving if you can get the barrel out, if only to have 1 key for both ign and lock as long as the ign key fits into the barrel once you've got the broken old bit out (ie the same cross sectional shape) Even if the keys are not the same profile, if the ign key will fit into the barrel, with patience the brass tangs that slide in and out can be filed to allow the barrel to turn. (You'll see what I mean when it's out!)
Good luck!
Simon.
