Locking fuel cap for a plastic tank?

The Missus just passed her competency test for pre learners (Tasmania) and is keen to start riding the TTR to work so i was wondering if anyone knew how to lock up the tank for some added security, more concerened about vandals and skanky additives than pilfered fuel. Fuel is easy to replace. Probably being paranoid but there are some Shi++as out there. Will be insuring it for Fire and theft as well.

I've got an acerbis locking cap - I'll see if it fits on the standard tank when I get home from work. Some hate the acerbis cap and have reported the threads are hard to line up. I haven't found that at all. IMHO it works great. Vents fine and doesn't leak either.

They only fit the metal tanks. Haven't seen a lockable cap for the plastic tanks other than the Acerbis ones - example here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Locking-Cap-Acerbis-Fuel-Petrol-Gas-Water-Tank-Tappo-con-Chiave-Serbatoio-/160366695780

Brian

PS Steve also sells the lockable caps for the metal tanks - see https://totallyttrs.com/epages/699105d9-e4cc-4b32-b236-84e72cd67f84.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/699105d9-e4cc-4b32-b236-84e72cd67f84/Products/TTR-0250

Here's a shot with the acerbis locking cap on the ttr tank and the ttr cap on the acerbis tank. They are interchangeable! biggrin They both crank down against their respective rubber seals so shouldn't leak. No guarantees though and YMMV. But it looks bloody close to me wink. I'd run with the acerbis cap if it was me.

Hi Chris

Thanks so far, could you tell me though if the acerbic locking cap actually locks on the Blue tank? As the inside of the kneck is longer on the blue one and not sure how it would lock.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Acerbis cap sure does lock wink. It's locking mechanism has zip to do with how high the lip on the tank is. When it locks the outside of the cap, the skin if you like, simply rotates freely when turned and doesn't grip on the body of the cap.

Does anyone know if you get pressure build up in the tank? I know the Acerbis locking cap lets the tank breathe air in, letting fuel flow freely, but what about pressure build up when standing for a long time?

Any feedback welcome.

Steve

The only problem I have experienced with pressure build up was with a plastic tank.

The TTR had been travelling down through France on a trailer in full sun and parked up overnight outside Torsten's lovely gaffe at Ride Limousin.

Embarrassingly for me it wouldn't start. It didn't take long to suss that no petrol was getting through. Taking off the petrol cap released the vacuum and all was well.

What had happened was the pressure had built up when the tank was hot to such an extent it had jammed the one-way valve in the breather pipe and when the tank cooled it had created a vacuum.

Took the breather pipe off and had two great days of riding with no problems biggrinbiggrin
