Hello All,

Just done a deal at the weekend which involved getting rid of my DRZ and picking up a lovely (read into that a bit tatty) '04 TTRsmile.

Unluckily though, looking at this forum and associated works, I think I may have bought a bit of a pupdoh.

But that's a story for a different thread. Any way glad to be on board, these TTR's look the business to me and it's great to see they've got such an active and enthusiastic followingsmile.

My name is Lee and I live outside Penryn in Cornwall,I'm in the TRF and love green laning, I try getting out at least once a week and look forward to taking up the hospitality of other TRF groups around the country.

Lee

Welcome, from neighbouring Devon, Lee. biggrin

Let me know if you ever decide to do some laning in Devon - we have a few in the vicinity.

What's the "bit of a pup" about? Nothing too drastic I hope. cry

Hey Martyn,

Yeah I've heard you got a lane or two up that waysmile, in fact I've ridden up your way a few times.

It's got a noisy starter but I wouldn't have said it bangs when turned off, more of a clunk, oh and it smokes a bit on start up not that that matters too much- just valve stem seals I guess.

I wanna ride it but if the sprag/starter does need replacement I'd rather sort it first.

Maybe I could trailer it up your way soon and let you cast a knowledgeable ear over it, if it's good then we can have a good day out on the trails and if sounds bad I can turn around take it home and start stripping it downwink

Oooh - sprag clutch?? blehbleh

There's quite a bit on this site's FAQ pages regarding this issue, take a look here:-

CLICKY THINGY  and it tells you how involved it is to repair.

If it's got a kick starter then you can get yourself mobile and back to base - but I know well that mine starts more readily with the button. wink

Best get it sorted before venturing too far, methinks.

Martyn

Hi Lee and welcome to the forum!

You beat me to that TTR by a whisker. I saw it advertised on the Cornshire TRF forum. Glen said he had p/xed it against a DRZ the day before I rang him. Got to be the same one.

Don't fret, the sprag clutch is a quick and easy to replace. If the starter is noisy then take the end cap off asap and check the starter pinion and starter gear teeth. If any are damaged then best not to use the starter until they are replaced to avoid further damage.

Lots of help and advice available here on the forum and in the FAQ.

Brian

Hey Brian,

Yeah same one, needs a bit of tidying but a bargain I thinksmile and I have done a full day on the trails along side the TTR and it gave Glen no troubles.

Can I use the bike if I just kick it over? - I'm very keen to get it dirty.

Small world eh Lee? Yep - you got a bargain and should still be quids in even if you replace the sprag, starter and gears wink

No reason why you shouldn't use just the kickstart but, usually, the cause of the noisy starter has been a kickback from a worn starter/sprag clutch. If that is the case and it happens again you stand the chance of making your replacement bill more expensive. I would check with Glen if he has ever replaced the sprag and, if not, do that first. If the UK retail prices alarm you and you don't fancy the hassle and wait for one to come over from the States then drop me a PM for a deal.

Only 3 bolts holding the starter cover on - defo worth checking out what's occurring underneath. Might not be so bad after all! A brand new starter is less than £100 and you might get one s/h if you search eBay - although you need the seller to confirm the pinion is 100% before you buy.
