Building a Rear Carry Rack
Permalink

Hi Guys

I'm currently building a rear carry rack and want to do some welding to the rear frame

I've added some mounting brackets and want to position everything in place then spot weld

My question is is it safe to weld in the bike directly, I was going to disconect the battery and the CDI

Some advise from Anyone that has actually welded on the TTR safely would be appreciated

Thanks
Steve

PS, anyone want some plans for the rack, I'll draw that up as well

That'll be me then. Did my welding with the battery and CDi disconnected and it was all good wink

Always interested to see rack plans biggrin

Simple and effective - nice job wink

My only reservation would be if someone were to use the same rear mountings on an older UK TTR they would need to check the frame tabs were good. Up under the rear mudguard gets clagged in mud and, even when properly power washed, can stay wet for a long time making them prone to rust.

Yours tabs look good though biggrin

Hey Guys

Thanks for the comments, if anyone is interested, the main frame is 8mm steel bar, as are the rear vertical supports, the front is 6mm steel bar (ran out of 8mm) and the cross bars are 3mm wire, the tabs are 25mm x 3mm flat bar, I bent the main frame around some 32mm steel tube to get the rounded corners, I welded a couple of washers into the top to attache the blinkers to, haven't hooked them up yet, the wires are to short of course !

What do you think of the white, I was going to go blue thought I would go with the classic, white on blue.

Rust isn't much of a problem around my way, most of the terain is sand and rock with a bit of clay thrown in, I can see that would be a problem though, I'm told that truck wash sprayed on and left for half an hour or so then washed off with a normal garden hose works great, the dirt just falls off, going to give it a try soon.
