New TTR250 owner in California!!

Hi guys, I just bought a pretty nice TTR250 (2005 model).

I've already made a bunch of modifications, (mostly cosmetic) but I need some advice from the group here on a few things.

Rather than ask outright, I'll read some previous threads and see if I can find what I need.

It's my 48th motorcycle... been riding since I was a pup on dirt and street. Really like the TTR. Great bike! Looking forward to getting and giving advice when I can.

Thanks!

BLIGHT

Welcome to THE TTR forum Brian.

48 is quite a tally of bikes for one so young confuse, have you enjoyed them all?

As Adam says there are many who will be ready with answers for you. It's up to you to pick the correct ones! wink

Hello.

I thought I'd had a lot of bikes. I've found the little TTR ticks lots of boxes and is a lot more fun than bigger bikes in many ways

Hey Blight,

Not to many U.S. or California users here.

I'm in the bay area. What part of Ca. are you?

What kind of riding do you do?

My 06 TTR is kind of a secondary bike for me. I mostly do street riding on a Moto Guzzi, but i've been converting my TTR from trail bike to 50/50 dual sport. I hope to start riding it more that way.

I'll just be using mine for work on client's private property. My business is designing farm irrigation systems, pumps, filtration, piping and drip or sprinkler irrigation systems. I do GPS ranch mapping with a Trimble AG332 GPS backpack system.

Just sold a Kawasaki Bayou 250 quad to move to two wheels. I'm a motorcyclist, and quads are just too weird for me. I used the quad for 3 yrs., didn't like it, and just decided to make the swap recently.

Not many places to ride recreationally anymore in this part of California. I'm between Salinas and Monterey, and the nearest place I know of is Hollister Hills. Never been riding there, but I hear it's nice.

It's hard to do carb jetting tests on my residential street (noisy & pretty illegal) so carb tuning is a bit of a pain around here.

The 30mm Tekei carb was just too troublesome for me... I cleaned it thoroughly twice, rebuilt it, fiddled with needle adjustments, pilot screw, and even tried putting in a 'jetting kit'. The accelerator pump was working too, but I never could get it to run right... big bog off idle. So, off it came.

I figured a new carb was in order, so I just installed a new Mikuni TM34 flat-slide and so far it's working very well! Easy starts cold or hot, rock-solid idle, no popping on decel, etc. The 280 main is way too big, and the #50 pilot is likely too big too, but it runs decently right out of the box, so I'm pretty happy. I'll order some smaller jets this week.

I have a FMF PowerCore exhaust system (8 discs, insert OUT) and UNI pod filter (not using the airbox) so it's pretty well 'uncorked'. I might look into making the TTR street legal, but that can be difficult here in the Republic of Cali.

I will do a new post outlining the carb swap, and show some pics of the carb & UNI filter on the bike. I'll wait until I'm 100% satisfied before I post my 'recipe' for main jet sizing, needle height, and pilot sizing. This stuff is jut NOT available on the web! I've been doing extensive searches and getting pretty much 'zip'

One guy online with a TM34 says the 142.5 main and a 42.5 pilot worked well on his XR250R, which is similar to the TTR engine. I may try that setup just to see.

I'll keep y'all posted!

Sounds like an iteresting carb upgrade. Be interesting to hear the outcome.

I just ordered a 145 main and a 45 pilot jet for the TM34... close as I could get to that guy's recommendations for his 250. We'll see how well it works!
